USB-C Power for Eurorack: A Practical Guide
How to power your Eurorack modular synthesizer with USB-C. We built Mini, a 4HP USB-C power supply module, and here's everything we learned.
If you’ve ever wanted to power your Eurorack system from a USB-C power bank, laptop charger, or any standard USB-C power source, you’re not alone. We built Mini — a 6HP USB-C power supply for Eurorack — and learned a lot in the process.
Why USB-C for Eurorack?
Traditional Eurorack power supplies are bulky, expensive, and tied to wall outlets. USB-C changes the equation:
- Portability — Power your rack from a battery pack for live performances or outdoor jams
- Universality — USB-C chargers are everywhere; no more hunting for specialty adapters
- Simplicity — One cable, one connector, clean power
The Technical Challenge
Eurorack needs +12V and -12V rails. USB-C Power Delivery can negotiate up to 20V, but most basic USB-C sources provide 5V. The key is designing a converter that:
- Accepts 5V USB-C input
- Generates clean +12V and -12V rails
- Handles the current demands of your modules
- Fits in a small Eurorack form factor
Our Approach: Mini
Mini is our answer — a 6HP module that converts USB-C power to Eurorack-compatible +12V/-12V rails. Here’s what makes it work:
- Dual DC-DC conversion — Separate converters for +12V and -12V with low ripple
- Overcurrent protection — Shuts down safely if you exceed the power budget
- LED indicators — Visual confirmation of rail health
Open Source
Mini’s schematic and bill of materials are fully open source. You can build your own, modify the design, or use it as a reference for your own USB-C Eurorack project.
Getting Started
If you want to try USB-C power for your Eurorack:
- Start small — Test with a few modules before powering your whole rack
- Check your power budget — Add up the current draw of your modules
- Use a quality USB-C source — Not all chargers are equal; PD-certified chargers give the best results
- Consider Mini — Available on Etsy or build your own from our open-source design
